HEPD80 Home Surge Protection Device

What does a Surge Protector do?

A Surge Protector is a device designed to control very fast high voltage transients or surges that are common in our electrical systems. Voltage transients, large and small, can damage electrical equipment instantly or will degrade the components on the circuit boards over time, resulting in shorter life expectancies of electrical equipment. Surge Protectors are basically an insurance policy against electrical transients caused by voltage surges generated within the home, lightning surges, and utility-related surge events.

Square D Home Electronics Protective Device, HEPD80

The Home Electronics Protective Device (HEPD) is designed to provide surge suppression at residential load centers. Square D brand Home Electronics Protective Devices (HEPDs) are compact and affordable surge suppressors designed to be installed next to residential load centers. HEPDs work together with surge protection plug strips to provide surge suppression for sensitive electronics. HEPDs reduce surges that might otherwise overwhelm plug strips and damage connected household equipment. HEPDs also provide surge suppression for important items such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, and lighting that plug strips don’t protect.

Superior Performance

With an 80 kA Surge Current Rating, Square D brand HEPDs utilize high-energy suppression circuitry to protect household equipment from internally and externally generated surges. Each metal-oxide varistor (MOV) is individually fused with both thermal and overcurrent fusing.

Product seems decent enough, but wait until you have to file a warranty claim with the company when an incident happens. The manufacturer warranty claims that it covers the lesser of $75,000 in damages or your homeowner''s insurance deductible if the device fails to protect your home and any connected devices (within 5 years of purchase). Pretty awesome value on the surface. However, the commitment and communication by Schneider''s customer service to fulfill this product warranty is ridiculously horrible. It''s been 4 months now since our incident and they''re still "evaluating" our original device to determine if them paying our claim is warranted. Fortunately, I didn''t have to rely on them to cover all damages or I''d still be sitting in my house in the dark. A nearby lightning surge caused a lot of damage back in late August and it took us approximately 60 days to actually reach a live customer service representative. They claim there was a phone system error... Really?! We had to get on the company''s Facebook page to even get a response, and then it was their Technical Support folks that finally got us connected to someone in claims. Since then, the rep has communicated what she knows which seems to be not much. They''re still "testing" and "evaluating" in order to award claim funds. It seriously seems like they''re just stalling in hopes that we''ll drop it & they won''t have to give us an answer. I will never buy another Schneider Electric product for my home. Buyer beware!

Previously "Made in US" but not any more. The unit I received which I decoded with a manufacture date of 1602 (2nd week, 2016) is "Made in Mexico." I take points off for that . . . .
Rated at 80kA, which is very high, HEPD80 is 2-3x of the push-in breaker space protectors which are easier to install (but those protectors are recommended to be close to the ground bus). For me, my Central AC took up the first 3 breaker spaces (#10 & #12 gauge wire) which couldn''t be moved as there wasn''t enough wire slack length.
This unit, HEPD80, doesn''t have any location requirements except to keep wire lengths as short as possible & not to coil or bend wire. Placement flexibility and higher surge rating (but higher cost, and higher initial installation time) seem a better solution.
The HEPD80 is connected to a recommended breaker of 2-poles, 20A (2-poles to cover both supply wires) - - I used a new breaker, but I''ve seem one installer in Youtube just add to an exiting breaker (each wire clamp can hold 2 wires).
By coincidence, I have a Square D main panel -- the panel states it''s a "Homeline" model (vs. "QO" model which is more expensive) -- bought the breaker from Home Depot which carries breakers for both lines (HD also carry GE, Siemens, etc.).

The product description on this site shows a panel drawing -- 2 black wires to TWO adjacent, single pole breakers (but a double pole breaker - 2 spaces - is OK), green wire to ground bus bar and white wire to neutral bus bar (some panels have ground & neutral on same bus). 2 1-pole or 1 2-pole breaker(s) to cover 2 supply wires providing 120V & 240V. Drawing shows breakers immediately after main breaker -- the drawing is NOT on furnished instructions, and instructions says to just mount Device to an available knockout & have no restrictions on location.

If you DIY install, be sure to shut off main breaker in the panel, but be aware that supply wires BEFORE the main breaker are ALWAYS live. Wires & contacts AFTER main breaker are off when main breaker is off. Thus, the panel is still hot when the main breaker is off so touching the supply wires can still kill you.
I don''t know why panel makers don''t put a hard plastic cover over the supply (input) area that would cost 25 cents in material and save a few lives - a careless electrician or a novice DIY (I guess it''s too much to de-risk and it''s human fault if they are killed).

The HEPD80 is a great value to provide some protection for your main electrical panel.
The surge protector will also help avoid spikes from an emergency power generator.

Most new furnaces, washing machines, clothes dryers, stoves, dishwashwers, microwaves and hot water heaters now have electronic circuit boards that are unprotected from power spikes. We commonly protect our TVs, DVD Players, Computers and other electronic devices that cost less than our major household appliances.

The HEPD80 fairly simple to install (if you have any electrical experience). FYI: This job is not for the someone that has no idea what they are doing (I am a journeyman electrician with over 25 years of experience).

I have installed several main panel surge protectors over the years. The HEPD80 has a very high rating (80,000 amps) for maximum surge amps. If you ever experience a surge this high, it would most likely be from a direct lightning strike and you will still have some damage. This unit would protect you as much as any other high end surge protector.

The HEPD80 has two green lights that tell you from a glance that it is operating properly.
If one (or both) of the green lights are out, you will need to investigate for a problem.
Problems could range from a tripped circuit breaker, you lost the incoming power feed or that your main electrical panel has taken a hit and your surge protective device did its job and is in need of replacement.

This is a fairly compact unit ... and best of all it is MADE IN THE U.S.A. (Yes, that still matters to me).

I highly recommend this product!

Installing this device was as simple as can be but I did not see where it had to be installed on a dedicated 20 amp double pole breaker. I had just assumed I could connect it to an existing breaker but this is not the case so please be aware of this before you get started because you may end up needing to make another trip to your local home improvement store (approximately 130 mile round trip for me).

The only "issue" I had with installation was the lights did not light up after I turned on the power.

I checked and rechecked multiple times. I had power to both blacks and the white went straight to neutral while the green went straight to ground.

Everything was as snug as could be but no lights.

I worked on it for hours until the sun started to set and then I could see that those darn lights were on all the time.

They are very dim so as silly as this sounds look very close or else you may spend a few hours installing something that shouldn''t take more than 15 - 20 minutes tops.

I hope your eyesight is better than mine.

Had a ground lightning strike near a post lamp in the yard a while back and it vaporized the lamp & photo cell on the post. I was lucky, the surge stopped at the GFI outlet that fed the post when it fried open circuit. With the cost of today''s electronics and the high deductibles on Homeowner''s Insurance, this is a cheep secondary step to protect equipment. Installation on the bottom of the Service Entrance through a standard knockout was quick & easy. Hook the two black wires to each half of a 240V breaker and the white & green to the buss bars and that''s it.

2020 update: After 7 years of this device in service, I sold the house where it''s installed. Had several close lightning strikes over that period and never another problem. The new owners got a bonus they have no clue about.

Good unit in general. Highly recommended to have this unit or one of its more expensive counterparts in your home. Lost a star on the warranty however. Good luck ever making a claim on that one! They make it almost impossible (and expensive with a third party investigator involved) to make a claim if the unit does NOT protect you. The unit appears to protect well for all known types short term events. However in the past I had a transformer failure put ~1,000 volts sustained to my residence, which by reading all the included paperwork, I do not think this unit would protect you from. Could be wrong. Don''t think any of the competitors units would either unless they were wired in line of your main service to actually cut the flow of power. This unit is sort of like a small power sponge. It absorbs short term events, but if a flood comes, it would not help. PS, two quality "un-interruptible power supply" (UPS) units saved all of my connected electronics during my over voltage incident, however, I did loose multiple appliances which were direct power.
